Name is Dave. QTH is a tiny city lot in Phoenix, AZ. I'm a retired RF jockey playing radio for fun. My lovely wife Liz, is very tolerant of my radio hobby. She serves as the voice of reason in budgetary and neighborly considerations (no tower).
Like many veteran Amateur Radio Operators I took a long hiatus between school and my current activity. Fast forward four decades and I'm once again exploring propagation, chasing DX and experimenting with antennas in our tiny yard.
When you lack sufficient land for horizontal wire antennas, vertical solutions start to look pretty good (still no tower). Take a look at the helium lifted vertical or try a separate receive aerial.
In this urban environment reception challenges abound from a variety of noise sources. I am quite familiar with sounds of appliances, dreaded plasma TVs and can name that air conditioner by its RF noise signature.
Added a computer interface to the mix a while ago and enjoy the digital modes. Even made a few DX contacts on 160 meters. Still gets my heart going. Liz has suggested GEEEK. Perhaps.
